provides funding to the hospitals based on volume and ability to meet
quality standards for services such as cancer surgery and colonoscopy,
and programs such as the Ontario Breast Screening Program and the New
Drug Funding Program, created to ensure equal access to cancer drugs in
Ontario.

About the Juravinski Cancer Centre
Built on the Niagara Escarpment overlooking the city of Hamilton,
the Juravinski Cancer Centre serves more than 1.7 million people in the
central west Ontario region and sees more than 5,000 new patients each
year. The centre operates on a philosophy that combines high quality,
evidence-based treatment, compassionate care, education and research.
Researchers at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, in partnership with
McMaster University, are international leaders in this field, making
significant contributions to the growing body of knowledge about cancer
treatment and control around the world. As an academic health sciences
centre, the Juravinski Cancer Centre is actively involved in educating
and mentoring the next generation of physicians, health professionals
and researchers.
Creating welcoming spaces and a healing environment is a priority
at the Juravinski Centre. The use of natural light, music and an
extensive art collection contributes to the creation of a soothing
environment for patients, their families, volunteers and staff. Another
notable feature is the chemotherapy day care suite, which features an
open fireplace and natural light. The centre also runs a “Music in the
Courtyard” program, where volunteer musicians perform throughout the
week to help create a supportive atmosphere for patients and their
families. A Patient and Family Resource Centre, conveniently located in
the main lobby, provides information and a quiet place for reading.
Construction
on a second cancer centre for Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Regional
Cancer Program is scheduled to begin in 2009. The new Walker Family
Cancer Centre in St. Catharines, expected to be finished in 2011, will
be a multidisciplinary facility that will provide a range of cancer
services in prevention, screening, supportive care, systemic and
radiation therapy. It will become the hub of a coordinated regional
cancer treatment network for Niagara, serving the more than 2,500
Niagara residents diagnosed each year with cancer.
